Rob Peters, Director of Economic Development for the City of Streetsboro and member of the Leadership Class of 2017 introduces the first conference speaker.
After speaking about his golf career, Curtis focused on his commitment to alleviating childhood hunger in Kent through the Ben Curtis Family Foundation. Founded in 2013 by Ben and his wife Candace, the foundation developed the Birdie Bag concept. These bags, filled with food, go home with students in need on each of the 10 long weekends throughout the school year. A typical Birdie Bag contains nine meals and six snacks. The program has been so successful it has been mimicked in several neighboring communities.
When the foundation first started, Curtis and his family would assemble the bags in the basement of his home. The small group labored for hours to assemble the bags to be distributed. Now the operation is housed in a larger facility and a group of volunteers aids in the process. Last year more than 900 Birdie Bags went home with students in need each month during the school year.
